High CPU usage of Dreamweaver CS5? Here the solution!

Well, i saw in many forums that Dreamweaver CS5 eats a lot of CPU, from 50% to 80% almost all the time. I had experimented the same as you dear user, and I step with a simple solution.

I remembered that one of the new coolest features of Dreamweaver is to bring the related documents you have when you edit a file. Also it is nice when you are using Drupal or WordPress to design a new site, check plugins and how it affect the final site.

Well, THAT IS THE PROBLEM!!! this new feature somehow eat a lot of resources even without asking!!!! even if you set up as automatic discover, it will still eat your CPU.

So, before i show the solution, here the specs of my dev computer:

- Dell Vostro 200 slim
- CPU Intel Pentium Dual Core
- 2 GB RAM Memory
- Windows 7 ultimate 32 bits
- Adobe CS5 Master Edition Installed.

Now proofs that DW eats my CPU

The first screenshot shows DW running 40% of my cpu with 10 docs in autodiscovery. This include php files, css, js and html files:

The problem became worse if you let your Dreamweaver running in background. In the next screenshot you see I’m running Firework CS5, and it start to eat more CPU:

now that you see the problem…

Let’s go to the  solution

  1. Open your DreamWeaver CS5 and go to Edit->Preferences
  2. Under General disable the option Enable Related Files. Click OK
  3. Dreamweaver will ask you that changes will be applied on the next DW restart.
  4. Close your Dreamweaver CS5
  5. Make sure on the task manager DW is not anymore and run it again
  6. Enjoy :)

Results

here screenshots of  the results, opening 10 documents at the same time:

And here working in background with Fireworks CS5

Enjoy :)

  • This works. Thanks! :D

  • Didn’t help.

DW uses 90% CPU usage on dual core when I’m not doing anything with it (while I’m writing this!!). Dreamweaver must be the most badly written software on the planet!! It is working with the smallest files and has the highest CPU usage. Plus it has very high memory usage.

I continue to use it because of the site management and the syntax highlighting. There must be better alternatives.

    • Do you have a network connection to your webfolder? usually happens that if you have a network shared folder with Dreamweaver it literally eats your resources. Try to don’t generate projects directly over network folders, instead of it use your local computer as development environment. I had recently nightmares with a site I’m doing maintenance to my app and I need to run a script in Ubuntu to clear cache files generated by my local development server.

So avoid network folders in your projects. It will help if you write more about your problem, so I can research a little bit more.

    • Hello Mike, I don’t know if you are using a network folder for your projects, but i can tell you that HUGE projects and network folders can make troubles in CPU Usage.

I can tell you that probably you should move your project locally instead using a network folders.

It will be helpful if you can describe better your development environment. as i wrote before, if you left DW in background, it will eat resources without asking, so be aware of it next time.
